Dex invites nominations for a Founding Expansion Board to steward a free, CC-BY library of artist-made video and audio — “free, forever.”

Los Angeles, CA — August 23, 2025

Dex Digital Sample Library (“dex”) opens nominations and self-nominations for its Founding Expansion Board, seating in Q1 2026. Dex maintains a growing public collection of CC-BY 4.0 video and audio—commissioned sessions, festival captures, and reusable sample sets—so artists, filmmakers, educators, and developers can reuse and remix without paywalls (with attribution). The catalog now includes ~30 hours of material and has logged ~12,000 download events to date.

What’s new

dexDRONES — a new video wing releasing drone video packs as CC-BY assets for immediate reuse.
In Dex — expanded student residencies focused on producing public-domain or CC-BY materials.
DexFest — the annual capture-for-the-commons festival at the heart of Dex’s community practice.
Season 3: YOU — Dex opens user uploads. Contributors choose CC0 (featured as submitted) or CC-BY 4.0 co-release (Dex may edit/bucket/splice, color-grade, mix/master and publish with joint attribution). All releases remain free, forever.

Time: ~6 hours/month. Compensation: board service is uncompensated. Directors are appointed by board vote.

Process & guardrails

Nominations are reviewed by Dex’s Search/Governance Committee. Invitations to the closed-door briefing are discretionary; recommendations to the full board follow a short preview path (observer/advisor/committee), conflict-of-interest clearance, and references. To protect open access, Dex screens for ties to PROs (ASCAP/BMI/SESAC/GMR) and to major labels, streaming platforms, or ad-tech. Bylaws include Reserved Powers that hard-lock CC-BY 4.0 and “free, forever” access.

You know who makes rooms smarter. If someone in your orbit lives the open-access ethos and can move an arts/tech nonprofit forward, we want to learn their work. Dex exists to advance artmaking by putting high-quality performance media in the commons (CC-BY 4.0) — free, forever. This season we’re building dexDRONES, hosting JHU/Peabody residencies, and producing Season 3 commissions and events.
